Cicadas are ancient, yet fleetingly ephemeral; emerging periodically from long subterranean cycles - carrying the weight of deep time with their small bodies.

In this work, the cicada undergoes a transformation. The organic matter of its exoskeleton unfolds into flickering digital light.

This shift invites viewers to consider what it means to inhabit a body - one that exists temporarily and is defined by its relationship to time.

In its new digital state, the cicada occupies a space between presence and absence, life and inertia.

This work itself is an expanded form of sculpture. The process of making this work involved reconfiguring 3D-scanned models of cicadas. Each point in space that makes up the object has been translated into a single pixel within each frame. Translating the object into a video allows for a new way of seeing an object.
