a painting of roots growing through the soil
2026
Direct Animation on Super 8 Film
x m x s

This hand-painted direct animation shows a living landscape in flux; exploring the unseen networks underneath the surface of our landscapes.

The work imagines roots spreading and growing through soil. Each tendril emerging, dissolving, and re-forming in a fluid, continuous motion - branching and adapating in response to the changing terrain.

In contrast to the traditional notions of the British landscape, where the sublime is grounded in distance and monumentality - this work proposes a different way of understanding space and place. Rather than viewing the landscape from afar, it invites the viewer into an immersive encounter with the quiet, and hidden network connecting us all.
